I’ll say HAMK is like the academic media station for the latest innovations in the field of engineering. You are taught the current and future technology by those who are currently involved. The teachers are combination of experts from various fields. They will only teach you what is directly applicable to reality.
In IM, you are not constrained to the classroom learning alone, you also visit the various Finnish industries within and outside the Pirkanmaa region. The top managements of these companies are always there to welcome you, make you feel among and share their experiences with you. It is always motivating to see how the theories are applied in real life. Studying in IM is like being on a ship filled with friends from different parts of the world. We speak different languages but we are able to understand ourselves. Why? Because, we relate in an atmosphere of love and trust.
Studying in Industrial Management makes you live your dream!
I graduated 2007 from Business school in Tampere. That is a vocational school. After that I started to look different possibilities for my next study place because I wanted to get better education than just the one I got from vocational school.
At first my initial plan was to apply to the University of Applied Science in Tampere and to the business program. The business program would’ve been in the same field as my previous studies in the vocational school but at higher level.
After doing some research and talking with my family I came to a conclusion that I wanted to combine my business studies with technology studies and the proper education would be engineer studies. I started to find a right program for me and after a while I applied to the University of Applied Science in Tampere and to the machine and production techniques. I studied there for a 6 months after I realized I wanted to study Industrial Management instead of this and I resigned from the school and started to look best place to study Industrial Management.
I found out that HAMK has Industrial Management program in Valkeakoski and it is also in English so I would get international studies as well. I applied to HAMK and started to study in Autumn 2010.
I have studied now for about 2 months and the atmosphere in HAMK has been great. It is a great experience to have a wide variety of nationalities in your class and school and have this multicultural environment every day at school. You learn so much about different cultures and different ways to approach issues and values. English language studies are a big challenge for me. It’s been somewhat easy to understand teachers and teaching but the hardest part is to produce proper oral English and speak fluent English. That is a thing that improves everyday in this kind of environment.
At the moment my career plan is to find nice job after graduating as a sales or a marketing engineer in some industry company. This was the main reason why I chose to change my degree program into Industrial Management that I wanted to combine technology and business and I didn’t want to be a so called “normal” engineer who focuses only to one specific area.
After high school it wasn’t an easy job to decide what to study. I was interested in business and also in engineering. Then I found the degree program in Industrial Management and immediately I knew that this is what I want to study. I haven’t regretted that decision at all.
I studied abroad twice
HAMK University of Applied Sciences is genuinely international and there are many possibilities to do exchange studies abroad. I studied abroad twice, in Spain and in Argentina, and those experiences were worthwhile. In my final thesis I wrote about “Developing the welfare of the workers and the management culture in Liha Saarioinen”.
Permanent Job before Graduation
Before graduation I got a permanent job in Etteplan Design Center. Etteplan Design Center is a partner with KONE elevators and actually I have been sitting in a KONE office for a couple of years now. I started my career as a designer. After I became familiar with the products I got my own project to look after as a Project Supply Manager. Lately I have worked as a sales engineer in a major project unit.
I would say that the Industrial Management engineer can work in any field of industry and in any position. Someone may think that there are too many opportunities, but I really have enjoyed this opportunity to be involved in different tasks after graduation. No one knows everything after graduation but remember HAMK’s learning environment gives you the tools to survive and develop in working life.
The Industrial Management Degree Programme is one open door to entrepreneurship. In these difficult times of recession and when graduation is on the horizon, Tuukka Martikainen thought why not make my own future and become an entrepreneur. Tuukka, now in his fourth year will graduate as an engineer in April 2009, and is not willing to become a couch potato.
His future plans are laid out clearly in an interview with Aila-Liisa Laurila in the Uutiset Talous (economic news) section of Aamulehti 9th February 2009. He states that his attitude came from childhood by observing the way his grandfather worked as an entrepreneur. He had his first entrepreneurship course back in secondary school and this knowledge and fervour has developed within him from that time. This influenced his decision to study Industrial Management because it offered him a wide understanding of working life that best suited his dreams. The learning of techniques, economics and business gave him a strong sustainable foundation to take forward his idea of a business plan which was then further expanded in a practical way at Ensimetri.
His plan is to be a consultant where he leads and completes projects that are created to develop companies.
I think that I'll get a lot of different kinds of experiences abroad, I will learn new ways to live and study and one of the most important things is studying languages. English is the most important language in the global world and I want to develop that. I also want to learn as much Spanish as possible. My opinion is that exchange will also make me more valuable when I am applying for a job place. Exchange is a unique opportunity that I can't skip!
I am studying in Tecnológico de Monterrey Campus Ciudad de México. Tec de Monterrey is one of the biggest Universities in México and I am studying in the México City Campus, where there are about 9000 students. My major is Industrial Management and Engineering and here I am studying similar courses that we have in Finland, like Management and International Business. I am also studying Spanish.
After four weeks I can say that studying is quite different from Finland. Firstly, you have to pay for studying in the University each semester. School days are very long here, courses are from 06.00 to 22.00, it depends what courses you're studying, but days can be quite long sometimes. Studying is harder than in Finland, you have to read more and do more tasks. In school they are very accurate about absences, you can’t be out when you want and otherwise school and its actions are very systematic. My opinion is that students are very motivated and they want do their best and succeed in school.
So far, I have learned new ways to live and study; we have done different kinds of tasks than in Finland. Everything has been new, so I have learned a lot about the country and people. People in México are very open, warm and kindly, I have made many new friendships. I can also say that my English is already better than when I came, because you use it very much and classes are in English (also in Spanish). I have also learned some Spanish and I hope and know that I'll learn much more!
My mission is to learn a lot from the courses in Tec de Monterrey, which are in their own way different from Finland. I also want to learn from a lot of people in México, both local and other exchange students and their ways to live, work and study. I want to make new friends. One of the main points is also travelling, I try to travel and see different places as much as possible. I have still almost 4 months left time in México, I am going to use it as effectively as possible and enjoy my life in México. The flight home is leaving in the middle of May…
I had heard a lot of stories from people who had been in some other countries as an exchange student. They had usually only good stories to tell. I have always had an idea in my head that someday I will go somewhere to do my exchange studies. And luckily our school has a lot of good options to offer for that. I think time here abroad, in a different country with new people and foreign language will help me to develop myself in every aspect of life.
I have been now almost one month in México city, in University of Tec de Monterrey to study international business, management, futures options and other derivatives and of course Spanish. The university is a private university so all Mexican students need to pay for studying here. The studying here commands maybe a little bit more work than in my home school because of all of partial exams which are once in month. In my courses we have a lot of team works and presentations as well. Students here may have very long school days and earliest classes can start at 6 am and end at 10 pm. Here we have really strict orders about absences from classes. If you have too much absences, you can´t take a part to the final exam. But it seems like students have used to study like that. The campus area itself is very nice with big park and lot of things to do. It´s should be winter now, but the winter seems to be very warm and sunny here especially in day time. :)
So far it has been just interesting to notice how different things can be in other country. Traffic here is crazy and it´s usually really crowded. Here is little bit pollution problems, but actually I thought that it would be worst before I came here. The city itself is huge… it´s hard to even realize how big it is. In Mexico City lives about 20 milj. people. People here are very friendly and they are always ready to help you if it´s needed, and I think that is a part of the culture here. I also like a lot the Mexican food a lot which can be quite spicy sometimes. They make even candies from chili. My time here so far has thought me to know little bit of Mexican culture and the habits here. I have also seen some beautiful sights like the pyramids in Teotihuacán. But I know that we have a lot of days left and things to see so I am really much looking forward the rest of my time here.
During the Spring I am hoping to pass all my courses here and learn new things and get new friends as much as possible. I am also looking forward to see some beautiful Mexican beaches. I think that besides the studying here is really important to travel little bit and see other places of Mexico as well. We have already made some plans to visit for example Acapulco and Ixtapa and hopefully some other places too.
The Spring semester here goes from Jan. 2th to May 15. After that I will come home whit a back full of new experiences. :)
I studied information technology in Hämeenlinna last year and by December figured out that it was what I wanted to do rest of my life. So I started to look some other DP’s from all over Finland and one of my friend suggested me to study in english. Why not, at least language couldn’t hold me back if in the future I wanted to work abroad. I studied in HAMK and did not have any complains about the school so Industrial Management in Valkeakoski was an easy choice for me. I Applied and got in, haven’t regretted that choice single time.
School has a great enviroment for learning, new building and open and multicultural atmosphere. Plus school doesn’t have that many students so you really learn to know them. Studing in English was little bit scary at first but ones you get some gourage it’s all good and understand that you can handle it. I’m not sure what field I’m going to take as major but I know I’m going to make most out of it. Hopefully I’ll have permanent job that I enjoy doing when I’m 28 years old. At this time I have no other plans, all will turn out great!
I had been thinking of studying abroad but was not sure whether it's something for me. If I ask anybody who has studied abroad, he or she will always tell me that it is a life-changing experience and one of the most rewarding things he or she has ever done. So I took a bold step, and the first step was to go online and check for schools that offers the program i intended studying, for already i had studied Industrial Chemistry and have a B.Sc in it and hardworking experience of three years.
I now wanted a management program with technological background, lots of schools came up on the net and had to make a choice by asking questions and HAMK UAS suited my choice .
I had to apply online, got a mail from the school, instructing me to go to Ghana to write an entrance examination, which i did in 2009 and also wrote my TOEFL exam the same week.I got my supplementary admission from HAMK few months later. I was asked to send my credentials to the school, which i did.
Several months later, i went to finnish home office in my country to apply for a student residence permit ,my permit came a bit late that made me miss some lovely events as i was told by my coursemate but here i am in HAMK UAS Valkeakoski and studying a course that i believe will make me learn the rudiments of being technologically sound and at the same time a manager.
This i belief is connecting business with engineering. There is a growing need for industrial management engineers in all industrial fields. Whereas the education and training of other engineers is traditionally focused on a specific field of technology, so industrial management undergraduates in HAMK explore business and engineering in a more diverse, extensive and integrated manner.
I know i will gain qualified and valued technical and economic skills as an industrial expert in a managerial field. The key areas HAMK focuses on, are industrial services and industrial production.
My career plan is to be an expert and developer in efficient, economic and commercially global production networks, including manufacturing, production and quality control, maintenance, or marketing.
I would love to go to the United Kingdom, Glyndwr University, Wales, Faculty of Engineering.
For when I join Glyndwr University as an undergraduate (exchange student) student Iwill enroll as a member of the School for Undergraduate Studies. The School for Undergraduate Studies is a community focused on you. Here I will receive the support I need throughout my student life, and the support to reach my potential. And garner more knowledge in purchasing, logistics, supply chain, project management, and economic activities.
I strongly have the faith and determination to complete my program and become more fulfilled in life and i know am at the right school and place to propel me to my final destination in my academical and working pursuit .
Valkeakoski is a small town located in the heart of Finland, 35km awayfrom Tampere and about 100km from Helsinki capital of Finland.
Basically in Finland, everysmall town is usually boring with limited job opportunities, less social and commercialactivities compared to major Cities like Helsinki and Tampere, The commercialand social activity in small towns are usually the same routine due to thepopulation.
Most people living in small towns in Finland have limited opportunitiesto interact with people from different countries, different cultures andconsequently have limited opportunities to explore the World.
Unlike other Small towns in Finland, Valkeakoski is unique in the areaof population growth due to the increasing number of international studentsstudying at Hamk University of Applied Science. Exchange students and Degreestudents which give Valkeakoski a better opportunity and chances to be like abig city.
In the past, the population of the habitat in Valkeakoski is smallcompared to recent times, an increasing growing trend in the population of Valkeakoski.
Valkeakoski is currently experiencing a transformation stage due to theincreasing population of students studying at Hamk University of Applied Sciences, precisely INDUSTRAIL MANAGEMENT, INTERNATIONAL BUSINESS, AUTOMATIONENGINEERING.
INDUSTRAIL MANAGEMENT is a group of international students fromdifferent countries like Nigeria, china, Russia, Latvia, Ghana, Estonia andFinnish students as well.
Our Group Industrial Management is a major tool in transforming the townof Valkeakoski because of the presence of international students from differentcountries which is increasing the number of students.
Due to the high demand of competent and qualified Engineers in the worldtoday to sustain our industries and factories, the number of student coming toValkeakoski is increasing rapidly.
Valkeakoski is the home of international students; the population growthin Valkeakoski is continually increasing, causing an increase in the social andeconomic activities in Valkeakoski.
One of the benefit of having an increasing population growth inValkeakoski is basically, incraesing the opportunities of the Finnish peopleand foreigners an atmosphere of learning different cultures of people fromdifferent countries and backgrounds.
Most people travel to different part of the world to interact andunderstand the cultures of different Nations.
Our team INDUSTRAIL MANAGEMENT with a lot of International student asearlier mention is very much willing to show our cultures to the people livingin Valkeakoski and we are willing to learn to the Finnish way of life.
The motive is to get both the Finnish people living in Valkeakoski andthe foreigners studying at Hamk integrated together such that both the Finnsand the students we understand the Finnish culture and the internationalcultures.
We hope to achieve our aims and objectives through the cooperation ofthe people living in Valkeakoski as well as the students studying here.
Our group , strongly believe we can transform the city of Valkeakoski tomega city with a lot social activities , our culture show exhibition project is commencing soon at HamkBuilding , we are currently working with different international stars fromUnited Kingdom , Africa and Europe to Entertain the Finns living inValkeakoski. to work with us to transform the city of Valkeakoski.
I am a student of HAMK University of Applied Sciences studying Industrial Management.I feel the future belong to those who consciously work towards making things work for them. HAMK has different unit specialized in delivering different field of studies in different parts of Finland.
HAMK is a multinational and multicultural Institution and it works to deliver the best kind of education to her student. In my class for example we have students from various national ranging from Nigeria to Estonia, to Latvia, to China, to Russia and off course Finland.
And we would like to get more integrated into knowing more about the Finnish culture, and living Finnish generally. This we would like to do to enhance our level of internationalization. To this respect, HAMK introduced a course, Frendit, which entails combining adult students and regular students of HAMK,this course is also open to profession working adults in the society. Valkeakoski is the closest town to HAMK and we would like to ask that adults from this town participate in this course.
The structure of the course is that regular students would have adult student partner and the regular students get to know for example how working in Finnish firm is like, what interviewing, work proposal and application entails from Finnish firms and off course how life in Finland is like. Also, we would like to use this medium to inform High school students graduating soon that application into studying in HAMK starts soonest, and if interested more information could be gotten from our website www.hamk.fi
HAMK has overall students from 42 countries presently. And it is a good start for prospective Industrial Engineers. This is so because all competence ranging from connecting business and engineering, technical and economical skill, Industrial service and operation, and all others needed to equip one in the field Industrial engineering are carefully taught here.
A student will have the opportunity to choose either studies in Industrial Management, Automation Engineering and International Business from studying in HAMK, Valkeakoski unit.
We would love the adult students and especially professional adult workers to be interested in this project as it is going to help us a lot in this special part of our studies.
Hamk is very international university, I think it is very interesting to study with students from all the world. Studies is for free, in Latvia we don’t have a lot of study programmes for free. In Finland winter kind of sports is famous, and I wanted to learn from Finnish sportsmans their skills.
I am not very good at physics and chemistry, but I am interested in technical discoveries. When I applied for exam to Hamk university, first my option was International business, then at my grammar school were invited some businessmans and they were talking about our further choice a lot. After that conversation I understood, that better for me to learn engineering science than naked economic, because technical knowledge I’ll use practically and economics knowledge we can always get with time with life experience.
What I want from life and who I want to be?
I will speak about career and hobbies not about private life I like sport very much, I would like do sports all my life. And money and career for me is less important that sport. Because of that I would like to have not very busy job with many vacations.
I would like work with people, but not always, for example half of work time in a group half alone. I like manual job, because it is also some kind of training like in sport. Of course my knowledge in engineering I would like to include in my job. I wish than some day I could work at company which make something very amazing like cars, ships, planes, technical innovations.
