HAMK: HAMK in English: Education: Professional Teacher Education

HAMK University of Applied Sciences Professional Teacher Education Unit (HAMK PTEU)

In 2010, HAMK PTEU celebrated its 50th anniversary. The unit has operated in conjunction with HAMK University of Applied Sciences since 1996 and is Finland's largest teacher education unit providing formal pedagogical qualifications for teachers who work as educators in institutions of higher education, vocational colleges, institutions geared towards adult education and training, in public sector organisations, human resources management, as well as in business and industry.

The professionals entering the highly-competitive teacher education programme must have a Bachelor's degree at the minimum, or the highest available degree in their profession, as well as at least three years of relevant work experience. Our teacher students represent organisations from fields such as social sciences, business and industry, communications, high technology and engineering, and they use their professional organisations for thesis research or development projects. Most of the teacher students are employed while completing their teacher education programme, and 30% of them have no prior experience in teaching. The courses are conducted in Finnish, although specific modules are also available in English.
