About HAMI

Häme Vocational Institute is a multidisciplinary secondary level vocational school, which offers vocational qualifications in the fields of forestry, dairy production, agriculture, tourism and horticulture. Students can also complete vocational qualifications alongside a normal day job.

HAMI’s locations – Evo, Lepaa, Mustiala and the dairy unit – are venerable, highly esteemed and nationally renowned. HAMI works in close co-operation with HAMK University of Applied Sciences.

In Finland, vocational education is hands-on, using a learning-by-doing approach to study. Upper secondary vocational qualifications include supervised on-the-job learning, and skills are evaluated in demonstrations, which are planned and organised in co-operation with representatives from the workplace.  HAMI students can also complete their upper secondary school studies or matriculation examination parallel to their upper secondary vocational qualification.

A secondary level vocational qualification provides general eligibility for enrolment at universities of applied sciences and universities. Students graduating from HAMI may continue studies in the fields of dairy production and natural resources in a familiar environment as the degree programmes for the HAMK University of Applied Sciences use the same facilities as HAMI.

EVO

Evo graduates complete an upper secondary vocational education in forestry services and bioenergy.

Evo is the epicentre of Finnish forestry expertise and education. Forestry as a major subject was introduced at Evo in 1862. The traditions and close proximity to nature that the school offers as well as its state-of-the-art facilities ensure an education of the highest quality and erudition.

The teaching forest is approximately 2000 hectares in size and serves as a worksite for various practical assignments. The location includes research and testing functions, which play a significant role in the institution.

Evo also boasts vibrant tourism activities, with outstanding natural resources for wilderness hiking and recreation.

LEPAA

Lepaa is a nationally important horticultural education centre, which has taught leading professionals for a hundred years.

Lepaa’s prestigious horticultural farm and the wide-ranging and state-of-the-art facilities, equipment and machines of its production units allow students to learn the skills necessary for a career in horticulture in a real working environment.

In addition, students can complete further qualifications in golf course maintenance and also wine production as well as specialist qualifications in golf course management.

MUSTIALA

At Mustiala, students train to become agricultural sector professionals, who will have a command of field and livestock management as well as machine maintenance and repair.

The teaching farm encompasses an area of approximately 1100 ha, some 180 ha of which is devoted to fields. The farm offers the perfect setting for hands-on learning. Cereals, grasses, oil plants and sugar beets are cultivated here. The farm’s machine stock is constantly updated.

There are approximately 60 cows in the cowshed, including all native breeds. Piggery courses are held in co-operation with contract farms and other educational institutions.

Founded in 1840, Mustiala is Finland’s first school of agriculture. The venerable traditions of agricultural studies ensure that students will receive the highest quality education.

DAIRY PRODUCTION

HAMI is the only educational institution in Finland where students can complete an upper secondary vocational qualification in the dairy sector. The programme also prepares students for work in other food sector industries. The dairy production study programme is offered in Hämeenlinna.

The teaching dairy produces a variety of cheeses and nutritional fats. Students work in small groups, thus allowing each student to participate and put the knowledge and skills they have learned into practice.

Practical application plays a key role in studies. Approximately one year of the three-year programme is spent working in dairy production companies.
